Dr. Mayumi Randall is a Vancouver/ Richmond based performer and piano teacher in both classical and jazz genres.

Mayumi is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati with  Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance.  She has been teaching piano for over 30 years and her philosophy is to provide students with a solid foundation in piano technique and musical understanding.

She believes that in today’s musical environment,  it is important for a piano student to be able to play in a mix of musical genres.

Classical piano study is essential for developing technique, sight reading skills, and aural skills. Learning other musical styles such as Jazz, Blues, Latin, Pop, Asian pop, Worship music etc. is also valuable for developing improvisation technique, composition & arranging skills, chord chart reading skills, and ability to play with other musicians.

Her vision is for students to have an enjoyment of music for life, whether as a career musician, playing in a worship team or any number of the opportunities playing the piano may bring. She hopes to develop an inclusive skill set so students can be diversified and continue playing throughout their lives.

Her dissertation "The History of Piano Improvisation in Western Concert Music"

is now available. (Mayumi Ogura Randall Proquest 9424584)
